Market in exchange for waste: DSCC-Bidyananda initiative to build a clean city
With the aim of building a clean city, increasing citizens' involvement in waste management, and supporting marginalized communities, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Bidyananda Foundation have jointly launched the 'Market in Exchange for Waste' program.

The program was inaugurated on Monday at the field adjacent to the Hazaribagh slum in Ward No. 55 of the capital by DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md. Abdus Salam. After the inauguration, local residents deposited waste and collected various daily necessities including rice, pulses, oil, salt, potatoes, and tissue.

The DSCC administrator said that various wastes, including plastic, are dumped in drains and sewers, causing waterlogging. By depositing waste in designated places, it is possible to protect the environment as well as reduce waterlogging.

He informed that a permanent stall will be built in Gulistan within the next one week. An initiative has been taken to open one permanent stall in each ward of DSCC within the next 3-4 months. In addition, there is a plan to launch a 'Food in exchange for reading books' program for street children.

Jamal Uddin, executive director of Bidyananda Foundation, said the goal of this initiative is not just to assist marginalized people but to make them partners in cleanliness. In the last two years, about 1 crore taka has been earned by selling plastic waste, which has made it possible to feed about 4 lakh people.
