Target to generate 3,000-4,000 MW of solar power next summer
The government has set a target to generate 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of electricity from solar power to keep the power crisis at a tolerable level next summer. To achieve this target, solar panels on building rooftops or rooftop solar systems are being considered as one of the most effective solutions. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said this at an exchange meeting on installing solar power at 31 public universities, organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at Agargaon in the capital on Monday (November 2).

The State Minister said that the decision to install solar power will not be imposed on the universities; they will decide on the matter considering their capacity and reality. At the same time, the Power Division will also cooperate in helping the universities earn ‘carbon credits’ by reducing carbon emissions through the use of solar power. He also informed about organizing the ‘Bangladesh Solar Expo’ in Dhaka on November 3 and 4 to increase the use of solar power in the country.

In his presidential address at the meeting, UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed said, A large portion of the universities' operating expenses is spent on electricity and gas bills. If solar power can be installed under the Opex (OPEX) model, this expense can be reduced to a large extent. Mentioning such an initiative by Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), he called on other universities to come forward as well. At the meeting, Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh and vice-chancellors of 31 public universities including BUET, Rajshahi and JUST, and senior officials of the UGC were present at the meeting.
