The State Minister said that the decision to install solar power will not be imposed on the universities; they will decide on the matter considering their capacity and reality. At the same time, the Power Division will also cooperate in helping the universities earn ‘carbon credits’ by reducing carbon emissions through the use of solar power. He also informed about organizing the ‘Bangladesh Solar Expo’ in Dhaka on November 3 and 4 to increase the use of solar power in the country.
In his presidential address at the meeting, UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed said, A large portion of the universities' operating expenses is spent on electricity and gas bills. If solar power can be installed under the Opex (OPEX) model, this expense can be reduced to a large extent. Mentioning such an initiative by Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), he called on other universities to come forward as well. At the meeting, Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh and vice-chancellors of 31 public universities including BUET, Rajshahi and JUST, and senior officials of the UGC were present at the meeting.
