No biographies of 1,400 martyrs, their stories must be brought before the nation: Barrister Fuad
Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, General Secretary of Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, said that the trial of the genocide of the July mass uprising cannot be limited only to court proceedings. Alongside the judicial process, public opinion must be formed, public hearings must be organized, and the life stories of the martyrs must be presented to the people. Otherwise, attempts to question and weaken the trial may succeed, he commented.

He said these things at a discussion meeting titled 'The Spirit of the July Mass Uprising, Implementation of the Referendum Verdict, and the Trial of the July Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity and Our Responsibility' organized by the 11-party alliance on Wednesday (July 8).

Barrister Fuad said, 'We live in a country where separate programs have to be organized even for justice. What greater tragedy can there be than this? The fundamental duty of the state is to ensure justice for its citizens. It is the subjects, not the citizens, who have to ask for justice.'

He said, 'Today our fundamental question is whether the state we call a republic is actually a state of citizens. If the constitution recognized us as true citizens, then we would not have to organize programs at the district, sub-district, or national level demanding justice.'

Regarding the trial of the July genocide, he said, 'Two types of trials are needed here. One is the trial of those individuals who were involved in criminal offenses. The other is the trial of the Awami League as a political party.' He also alleged that efforts are being made to question the judicial process by highlighting dissenting opinions on this matter.

Calling upon the interim government, Barrister Fuad said, 'Let a public hearing be organized on the model of the Congress. Political parties, human rights activists, lawyers, and members of the martyrs' families will participate there. If the hearings are broadcast live on state-run media and various television channels, people will be able to learn in detail about the events of July.'

He further alleged that the stories of the martyrs and injured of July are not being adequately highlighted in the media.

Barrister Fuad said, 'There are no biographies of 1,400 martyrs; their stories are not coming before the people. Yet discussions are held on other topics every day. Through this, an attempt is being made to gradually erase July from our collective memory. If cultural and social resistance cannot be built against cultural fascism, it will not be possible to confront fascism only through the judicial process. Therefore, work must be done simultaneously in these three areas: justice, culture, and public opinion.'
