Rizvi announces BNP's stance on local government elections
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has commented that who will participate in the upcoming local government elections and who will not is entirely under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC) and the courts.

He made this comment in response to questions from journalists after submitting BNP's annual income-expenditure account for 2025 at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka on Sunday (July 19).

When asked about the letter submitted to the Election Commission by Jamaat-e-Islami to prevent the Awami League's participation in the local government elections, Rizvi said that what any other political party says is not BNP's concern. It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to determine who is eligible to participate in the elections according to the country's prevailing laws and existing legal framework.

Regarding the selection of BNP candidates for the upcoming local government elections, he said that since the elections will be held without party symbols this time, the party's highest policy-making forum—the Standing Committee—will decide on the outline for candidate nominations. No final decision has been made on this matter yet.

In response to a question about whether party candidates will be open to everyone in the election, Rizvi said that no formal decision has been made on this yet. When a decision is made in the party forum, it will be communicated to the media in due time.

Regarding the party's upcoming National Council, this BNP leader said that the council will definitely be held. The party's Chairman and Secretary General have already spoken on this matter. However, a final decision on which month the council will be held has not been made yet. He expressed hope that the date will be finalized and officially announced very soon.
