Recently, Sheikh Hasina mentioned the possibility of returning to Bangladesh by the end of this year. In this regard, Bangladesh's Law Minister M Asaduzzaman said that if she returns, she could be arrested immediately under the existing legal process.

India's Ministry of External Affairs has informed the parliamentary committee that the authorities concerned are examining the extradition request for Sheikh Hasina sent from Dhaka in accordance with the law. However, no final decision has been announced yet on this matter.

Recommendations on Bangladesh-India relations

In its report titled 'The Future of India-Bangladesh Relations', India's parliamentary committee made several recommendations aimed at further strengthening ties between the two countries.

The report said that sensitive issues related to Bangladesh should be handled carefully while maintaining a humane and principled position.

It also recommended expediting the normalization of visa procedures for Bangladeshi citizens. According to the committee, prolonged restrictions on visa services have created negative perceptions among the people of both countries and damaged bilateral relations.

Notably, India resumed tourist visas for Bangladeshis on June 28, 2026, nearly two years after suspending tourist visas in July 2024 due to political unrest and security reasons.

Call to renew Ganga water treaty

The report also highlighted the expiry of the 1996 Ganga water-sharing treaty as a matter of importance.

The parliamentary committee urged the initiation of prompt discussions with the Bangladesh government to renew the treaty, stating that negotiations should be resumed taking into account updated water flow data, the effects of climate change, and the views of the West Bengal and Bihar state governments.
