He made the call while speaking as chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Cyber Protection Act 2026: Security, Control, or Suppression of Freedom of Speech?’ organized by Jamaat-e-Islami's Information and Broadcasting Department at the National Press Club on Monday.

Mia Golam Parwar said there are questions over why an initiative is being taken to amend the Cyber Protection Act just four to five months after its passage. He also remarked that instability and indecision are visible within the government. He claimed that if the law is amended, political leaders and activists and journalists may face harassment.

At the seminar, Jamaat leaders alleged that the proposed amendment would create scope to control the media and people's freedom of speech and would threaten independent journalism. They demanded that the Cyber Protection Act-2026, gazetted on May 21 this year, be kept in force.

Besides leaders from various levels of Jamaat, journalists and media-related persons spoke at the seminar. The speakers called on the government to withdraw from the initiative to amend the Cyber Protection Act.

The keynote paper was presented by Associate Professor Rafiquzzaman Ruman, head of the Department of Journalism and Media at Manarat International University. Author and journalist Abul Asad presided over the event.
