On October 2, the Indian government, in consultation with the Ladakh administration, officially marked 28 strategic positions, including Gogra and Hot Springs, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on Indian maps. The purpose of this move was to improve the quality of official cartography and ensure accurate identification of border areas. The list of new or standardized names included by India includes high-altitude peaks, glaciers, rivers, and valleys.
However, China has reacted sharply to India's move. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called it ‘illegal and invalid’. She said Beijing has never recognized India's unilaterally established ‘so-called union territory of Ladakh’. Since the June 2020 clash in the Galwan Valley, amid allegations of territorial occupation along the LAC by both countries, this renaming and mapping has further increased tensions.
