Former ASP arrested in case of 'disappearance' of Saidhi's witness Sukharanjan Bali
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) has arrested a former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in connection with the 'disappearance' of Sukharanjan Bali, who went missing after testifying in favor of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee at the International Crimes Tribunal.

DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said that the accused former police officer Fazlur Rahman was arrested from his home in the capital on Thursday (July 2) night.

On November 5, 2012, Sukharanjan Bali, a resident of Pirojpur, went missing from the tribunal premises after coming to testify in favor of Sayedee at the International Crimes Tribunal. At that time, the law enforcement authorities said that he was later found in the border area. However, from the beginning, his family and several human rights organizations alleged that he was abducted from the tribunal area.

After the fall of the Awami League government, on August 21, 2025, Sukharanjan Bali filed a complaint in this incident at the office of the Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal. In the complaint, he said that he was subjected to disappearance and torture for refusing to testify against Delawar Hossain Sayedee in the war crimes case and later for testifying in his favor.

The complaint names 32 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. Additionally, 10 to 15 unidentified individuals have been made accused. The list of accused also includes former Chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal Justice Nizamul Haq Nasim, former Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed, former Deputy Law Minister Kamrul Islam, former Judge A T M Fazle Kabir, former Investigation Officer Helal Uddin, and former Member of Parliament for Pirojpur-1 constituency A K M Awal.

In the complaint, Sukharanjan Bali claimed that in 2010, he was pressured to testify against Delawar Hossain Sayedee. When he refused, he was beaten. Later, at the request of Sayedee's son Masud Sayedee, he agreed to testify in favor of Sayedee to present the true facts.

According to his account, when he went to testify at the tribunal on November 5, 2012, the police blindfolded him, tied his hands, and took him to an unknown location. There, he was kept locked in a windowless room for several months and subjected to physical and mental torture.

He further alleged that he was later taken to the border area. From there, he was handed over to the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). While detained in various prisons, representatives of international human rights organizations met with him and collected information about the torture.

Sukharanjan Bali mentioned in the complaint that even after returning to the country, he could not go to his home district of Pirojpur due to security concerns.
