Prayers halted at 136-year-old historic mosque, entry banned for runway expansion
Authorities have temporarily suspended prayers at the 136-year-old Gauripur Jame Mosque located inside the Dum Dum Airport in West Bengal, India. Entry for the general public has also been banned from Saturday (July 12) in the interest of second runway expansion and aviation security.

Locally known as the 'Bankra Mosque', entry to this historic mosque was previously allowed with special permission, but that permission has now been revoked. Additional security personnel have been deployed at the airport entrance to prevent anyone from entering without authorization.

Airport authorities said that the mosque's current location has long been hindering the expansion of the second runway. Additionally, it is creating obstacles for the safe takeoff and landing of large aircraft and for using the alternative runway during the renovation of the main runway.

Previously, the general public could enter through Gate No. 3 of the airport from the Birati crossing by showing identification. They then had to travel about two and a half kilometers inside the airport to reach the mosque. However, that opportunity has also been closed due to the new decision.

Discussions about relocating the mosque had been ongoing for a long time. Recently, several meetings were held between the North 24 Parganas district administration, airport authorities, and the mosque management committee. Later, an expert team and the airport security committee reviewed the matter.

The mosque management committee said they do not want to create any obstacles for the development and security of the airport. However, they emphasized that the 136-year-old historical heritage and the religious sanctity of the mosque must be preserved during the relocation.

Meanwhile, the airport authorities have proposed building a larger and more modern new mosque for the committee outside the airport. Discussions are ongoing between the two parties on this matter. The authorities have also assured that all facilities for conducting religious activities smoothly will be available at the new location.

For locals, the Gauripur Jame Mosque is not just a place of worship but an important part of the area's history and heritage. Therefore, although the decision to ban entry and relocate has stirred emotions, most are hoping for an acceptable solution through dialogue.

The administration has said that once the construction of the new mosque, the relocation schedule, and the religious formalities are finalized, details will be officially announced. Currently, discussions with all concerned parties on this matter are ongoing.
