Statement by Opposition Leader and Amir-e-Jamaat Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on International Democracy Day
On 15 September, Opposition Leader in the National Parliament and Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman MP issued a statement on the occasion of International Democracy Day.

In a statement issued on 14 September, he said that democracy is not merely a process of forming a government; it is the foundation of people's fundamental rights, social justice, freedom of speech, and the rule of law. He remarked that if democracy remains protected, society can move forward on the path of progress, free from autocracy, exploitation, and discrimination.

Criticizing the Awami League government in the statement, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the previous government deprived the people of voting rights, justice, and fundamental rights. He referred to the July 2024 mass uprising as a historic opportunity to establish democracy in the country. At the same time, he alleged that although BNP promised to institutionalize democracy before the election, it forgot that after coming to power.
