These incidents occurred between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM on Monday (July 6) in the Balukhali, Kutupalong, and Jamtoli (Camp-15) refugee camps.
Ukhiya Fire Service and Civil Defense station officer Dollar Tripura said that eight people died in landslides due to heavy rainfall. Upon receiving the news, two units of the Fire Service, the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), and Rohingya volunteers conducted rescue operations and recovered the bodies.
Rohingya leader Akhtar Kamal said that around 1:30 AM, a house was buried in a landslide in Block D-6 of Jamtoli Camp-15. Kamal Hossain (44), his wife Humayra Begum (39), and their four-year-old son Mohammad Anas were killed. Two other members of the same family were injured in the incident.
Shortly after, another landslide in Block D-7 of Kutupalong Camp-7 killed Md. Ekram, the seven-year-old son of Rashid Ullah.
Meanwhile, around 3:30 AM, a landslide in Block C-11 of Balukhali Camp-11 killed four members of the same family. They are Umme Habiba (27), her sister Tanzina Akhtar (13), brother Harunur Rashid (3), and Mohammad Rihan (5).
Cox's Bazar Meteorological Office assistant meteorologist Md. Abdul Hannan said that due to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and active monsoon winds, the area is experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. This situation may continue for at least another two days.
Meanwhile, authorities have warned that there is a risk of further landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps due to continuous rain.
It is noteworthy that currently, about 14 lakh 50 thousand registered Rohingya are living in the Rohingya refugee camps established in the forests of Ukhia and Teknaf in 2017. Among them, about 80,000 people are at high risk of landslides. Every monsoon season, landslides cause casualties in these camps.
